From the recording Working Sail
This song was inspired by two things.
Firstly, a dedication 'To Laura's world' in a book on environmental science that I read whilst at college.
Secondly, a trip in what was to become my father's Gaff Ketch wooden boat, across Mount's bay, from Penzance to Porthleven and back. Heading back west, towards St. Michael's Mount, with full sail as the sun went down. A lovely memory.
So, Laura's dream is a song about a better world as contemplated from aboard an old wooden gaffer!
A planet so precious and perfect.
Lyrics
I’m lost in an image of sailing the sea
And I’m lost to the vision, of Laura’s dream
And I’m hoisting the mizzen Close-hauled to home
Watching the sails fill as the wind blows
She is the warm touch of a superior mind
But she is trapped by society and punished by time
And I’m begging you listen What could you be?
Riding the swell on the ocean In Laura’s dream
The sunlight upon my bed
Departed alone she said
So goodbye, my song
And believe me now my love if our love has gone
A misguided night out you can regret in the day
You say Sing me to sleep in the evening and I’ll promise to stay
And you quote from the Bible
But I don’t know what you mean
I am awake and elusive In Laura’s dream
Bless my ignorance Hold me
The present pressures of life
The demands of the system We’re educated in crime
Aghast I look to the future the only sight left to see Is a planet so precious and perfect
Laura’s dream
The sunlight upon my bed
Departed alone she said
So goodbye, my song
And believe me now my love if our love has gone
